Good Trouble

Happy and hungry for the possibilities of you, except… you waited to starve her right on time to stroke your delicate ego.

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and by simply locking eyes with someone, you should be able to determine if they are fit for a season or just a reason.

I think it was your smile. It shined a light on the possibility of the night. It made her body quiver with uncertainty and curiosity. It was fueling the energy in the room and was making her question the recent pact she made to herself. The same agreement that any recently ghosted, heartbroken, or fed-up woman make to themselves. It sounds like a “new year, new me” resolution, except it’s full of hints of hope and doubt. Exhaustion and adrenaline. Passion and laziness. Full of everything you know and everything you crave. Everything you know to be true.

There wasn’t any hesitation when her friend approached the two of you. You two were ready for anything because the room already filled you with surprises. Her friend entered the space that the two of you left open, and she boldly followed…standing there wondering if anything about you would create a flicker of interest.

“I’m an accountant,” you said matter of factly.

Numbers? Maybe if you could put together numbers, you could put together her dating discrepancies. Her interest peaked because she assumed that you took accuracy, organization, and the future seriously.

You asked what she and her friends wanted to drink. Another calculated move that won over her offhand demeanor. A man that thinks about everyone as he focuses on one.

Many memories keep that night alive. No one can ever talk her out of what she felt that night.

She felt she had gained another guy friend. Maybe even a potential love interest that’ll spend forever with her.

Until tonight when you and she seemed to forget that words mean things. Words and feelings can become ugly.

That was then, and this is now…

“We’re doing too much too fast.”

Those words sparked a memory that caused her to match the frustration he displayed.

“After we handle that flight situation, we should stop talking to each other, right?”
